Compensation runs $180K to $280K base for mid-market sites, with bonus weighted toward safety, OEE, and conversion cost variance. They're the most operationally hands-on senior role in the org chart. The day starts on the plant floor, not in the office.

Plant Manager(s), Quality Manager, Maintenance Manager, HR Business Partner, and often Finance Business Partner all report to them. Plant Manager is typically the production-focused leader who owns the schedule, the shift supervisors, and day-to-day production execution but does not own quality, maintenance, or HR. In small or mid-sized single-site businesses the roles collapse into one, usually titled Plant Manager but functionally a Plant Director. In multi-plant businesses or sites above roughly 300 employees, the split matters. A Plant Manager reporting to a Plant Director is a clean structure, two co-equal Plant Managers reporting to a VP is not.

Single-site versus multi-site Plant Director experience: which to prioritize?

Depends on the site's trajectory. If the role is to optimize a stable plant, single-site depth is more valuable. The candidate has lived through the same operational rhythm long enough to spot inefficiencies a multi-site rotator would miss. If the role is to integrate a recent acquisition, install new systems, or lead a turnaround, multi-site experience matters more because the candidate has done it before in a different operating context. The wrong answer is to default to multi-site as 'more impressive'. Many of the strongest plant operators in food have spent their entire careers at two or three sites and that depth is the asset. I'll calibrate during scoping based on what the plant actually needs.

Roughly 300 employees, $75M production value, or three-plus production lines is where the Plant Director title and comp band start to make sense. Below that, a Plant Manager with the right caliber can carry full site responsibility, supported by functional leads (QA, maintenance, HR) who report in dotted-line and have solid lines to corporate. Above 500 employees or $150M production value, you almost certainly need a Plant Director with a Plant Manager underneath them handling production execution. The honest answer is that title inflation is common in this space. I'll tell you straight whether the role you're describing is genuinely a Plant Director role or whether you'd be better served hiring a strong Plant Manager at a lower comp point.
