They report to the Plant Director or, in better-structured businesses, to a Corporate Director of Quality or VP of Quality with a dotted line to the Plant Director. Comp typically lands in the $95K to $160K range. The role is high-pressure and high-consequence. A single missed verification, missed allergen changeover, or mishandled customer complaint can escalate into a recall, regulatory action, or major customer loss.

PCQI is the most consequential because it carries personal regulatory accountability under the Preventive Controls Rule. I verify all certifications during reference and document checks. Credential inflation on QA Manager CVs is more common than buyers realize.

I ask for the audit grade, the major or minor non-conformances raised, the corrective actions they personally owned, and the timeline for closure. Vague answers (such as 'we passed all our audits') get filtered out. Strong QA Managers remember every non-conformance because each one was a personal accountability. I'll also reference-check with the third-party certification body auditor if the candidate names them. Auditors talk and their assessment of a site's QA leader is more reliable than any self-reported audit grade. If the candidate can't describe a non-conformance they actually closed, they haven't owned an audit at the level required.

Eight to twelve years from QA Manager to VP of Quality is the typical arc, with two or three stops in between: Senior QA Manager or QA Manager at a larger or more complex site, Corporate FSQA Manager or Director of Quality at a single-site business, then VP of Quality at a multi-site company. The candidates who move fastest deliberately broaden. They take cross-functional assignments in supplier quality or regulatory affairs, hold a Plant QA role and a Corporate QA role, and get exposure to a recall or regulatory event early in their career so they're tested before they reach the VP seat. If you're hiring a QA Manager you want to develop into a future Director or VP, screen explicitly for breadth ambition during the interview.
